Getting Started with the FM Satellites

If you’ve never had the opportunity to communicate with someone via satellite, there is no better time to work the bird! Here is a link to a PDF file from AMSAT’s website describing how to operate LEO satellites using an HT. Most dual-band radios will work just fine including the Baofeng UV-5R. This document will guide your through the process of setting up and operating your radio to work satellites.

Here is a link to Orbitron, a very robust (but older) satellite tracking program: www.stoff.pl

Another nice satellite tracking program is SAT32PC. While this is not a free program, the demo version will run just fine as long as you don’t mind having to put in your QTH coordinates every time you boot the program: www.dk1tb.de/indexeng.htm

A web-based tracking site is N2YO.com. Simply select the satellite you wish to track and it will appear over a Google-type map in real time.
